Apparently June in this country is the beginning of Summer; which I find completely hysterical. For starters, summer is supposed to be in December; meaning that Christmas is just around the corner. It's also the beginning of some hot, hot weather in Sydney, meaning that the air conditioning is on at full blast & spending a mere ten minutes hanging clothes on the line usually calls for another shower.
Here? Here it's bizarre! It's been rainy, a little humid and sticky and grey. I know it's early days yet, but sheesh, this whole summer thing is crazy. Plus I keep thinking it should be Christmas time already, still a while to go for that yet!
Every evening when I walk from our train station to our flat, you can easily tell if it's been raining. The walkway between the house fronts and the strip of gardens becomes a passage for snails, great and small. Every time it rains, they make their way from the garden to the walls, and then back again. Sometimes they are out in such great numbers that you quite literally have to hop over them, or as some cruel souls have been doing, just walk straight over the top of them. They do it, the same journey, every single time. Back and forth, back and forth.
Lately I'm feeling a bit like a snail myself. I'm lethargic, my energy is slowly being zapped away, and sometimes I side more with the crushed ones. I'm not implying that anyone has stepped on me, physically or metaphorically, but I do feel as though I'm in the middle of my own repetitive little journey, though not quite as slimy. Luckily for me, I have my boys waiting for me on the other side, so it makes it all okay.
NB: Congratulations to Lindsey & Edgar, who are getting married this weekend!
Hey sorry your feelin a little squishy, we do have a very strange summer here it will probably start late August and keep going into autumn and in short bursts that’s why we always carry an umbrella we never quiet know! Hope your feeling more your self soon Seeya hugya *G*
ReplyDeleteThe summer gets better, I promise!! I think it would be so strange to have a hot december...I guess it's all what you're used to!
ReplyDeleteEarly June in Mississippi here on the Gulf Coast is definitely summer, more like mid-to-late summer, in the early 90s and humid! Enjoy anything less...
ReplyDeleteI wish summer would get here faster! In Oregon it is currently fifty degrees, windy, rainy and I am wearing thermal pants under my jeans (I refuse to turn on the heater because it is JUNE)! Usually by now it is in the 70s. Stupid weather. :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that summer in Australia starts in December, right before Christmas. =) To me, Christmas should be cold and snowy (which is weird because where I live it doesn't snow lol).
ReplyDeleteI hope you start feeling a bit less lethargic and more energetic & happier soon!
How awful and gross is it that I think snails are really cool?
ReplyDeleteIt would take me an age to get anywhere, for having to stop and move all the snails off the sidewalk...
ReplyDeleteI always found it bizarre when checking the weather forecast for Wimbledon that they'd say it's a perfect summer day but it'd be a max of 20 degrees with chances of rain. O_o
ReplyDeleteSounds like how the summer you missed was. Grey, raining, cool. Hardly any days worthy of an air conditioner.
ReplyDeleteI love how you called Jase and Oscar your 'boys'. I'm the same, except I have 4 of them. Sometimes I wonder what I'd do or say if I had a female pet.
Gotta love the English weather... it's all we talk about after all!
ReplyDeleteIt's not overly cold here at the moment, just rainy. And you're not the only one feeling like a snail, don't worry.
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't believe it's bloody June already - 6 months till Christmas (and my 21st!!).. YIPES!
It'll take a while to get used to the weather over there. And watch out for those poor snails - maybe you should make a sign saying "CAUTION - SNAILS CROSSING".
ReplyDeleteI've been feeling that way too, lately. And it doesn't help that it is summer and hot a muggy, which zaps any energy I DO have.
ReplyDeleteHow weird to think warm weather = Christmas. When I lived in Arizona, I had the hardest time wearing shorts on Thanksgiving because growing up in the snowy Midwest, that was unheard of!
When I was a little kid, I had a book of Christmas traditions around the world. I still remember the page that depicted Christmas in Australia--Santa arriving by boat as kids frolicked on the beach in their swimsuits. Believe me, I thought that was CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Northern Hemisphere!
