I don't mind it when it rains. (Good thing too, living in this sunny city and all.)
Seriously though, it's quite relaxing. Everything seems fresh, relaxed, peaceful - at least when you're sitting inside and away from it all.
What I do need to invest in? A decent umbrella!
I've gone through about three since getting here. On arrival, Jase had brought me a compact sized one; unfortunately, it quite literally blew inside out the first time I took it out in the rain. Since then, I've bought a few more, and they've all ended up in the bin.
We do have a big giant cane of an umbrella, except I feel like a grandma when I use it.
What I need, is a small umbrella that is light and easy to shove into my handbag, and that won't blow to smithereens the second the wind blows. It's got to be cheap (hey, I'm saving for shopping in the USA!) and even better, it has to be pretty.
Suggestions?

Um, I have a compact umbrella that has lasted for many years, but I have NO IDEA what brand it is. It has dogs on it, though.
I had the same problem when I lived in Boston. I don't even remember anymore how many umbrellas I went through. I gave up on umbrellas and invested in a Northface jacket. Now I actually have a London Fog umbrella which seems to be working well for me! And it's compact.
I gave up on umbrellas a long time ago and wear jackets with hoods instead. Much, much easier and you're never caught out (apart from on those scorching days in July when it suddenly pours down)!
A raincoat! It works perfectly here in Dublin. I think I used my umbrella 3 or 4 times in these couple of months... It's just too windy for umbrellas...
Rain? I've forgotten what that looks like already. But you'll be happy to know that I'm grumpily freezing my knockers off down here. I want summer back, damnit!

I second Stefi's suggestion. A nice raincoat and a rain hat. Plus, it leaves your hands free!
I think a big newspaper would do the trick!
But if you don't like that idea, I second the raincoat suggestion. I had one in London that I wore every day. It had huge pockets, so sometimes I didn't even carry a purse, just stuck the wallet in the pockets.
Umbrellas are a big waste of money. I have yet to be able to find a good one. If you hear anything though, let me know. I'm in need of a good one too. I don't tear mine up though. I just lose them. Maybe I need a buzzer on mine.. A buzzer..now that's a good idea. Ha.
Umbrellas are quickly sacrificed, but it is worth it to get a bigger one. Raincoats and boots help too. I like to use the long, old school kind. They're a pain to carry around (I carry a smaller, wimpier one the rest of the time), but on a torrential downpour day, it's a god send!
Well, I don't live in a place that rains like it does in London. But I have had a really sturdy Samsonite umbrella for about 12 years now that has served me quite well. Yes, it is the "grandma" style with the curved handle and doesn't go all compact down on itself. But I love it like that. I love the sound it makes when the umbrella pops open.

I have one of these: ShedRain WindPro. It's great. Never blown inside out, and it fits in my bag nicely.
Stumbled across your site... nice to meet you... the funny thing for me... living in Australia - I always had an umbrella but now I am living in Florida... you get a downpour for about 10 mins and it is over... I have very, very rarely touched an umbrella since living here... take care
