I got home from work yesterday and did the usual; threw down my bag and wandered outside to check on the bunnies, top up their water and give them some more veggies.
As I was leaning down to the hutch, I noticed Lucy had some fur missing on a patch on her back. I picked her up to look at it closer, and realised it was actually a sore - it looked like a bite or scratch that was a few days old. I checked her over, and discovered another big red patch near her leg - and promptly started to panic.
We took her to the vet, who checked her over and declared them 'open sores'. Apparently bunnies can get infections quite easily, so the scratch/bites have to be opened, cleaned out and sutured. Under anaesthetic, which is always questionable for such tiny animals.
The vet thinks that although Ricky and Lucy have been getting along well in their hutch together, Ricky is acting out as the 'dominant' female. It seems about right, as Lucy has always been a mellow wee rabbit. I just feel so sorry for her, the sores look horrible and painful - and if I hadn't picked her up today, I wouldn't have even spotted them. I feel like a bad rabbit momma, again.
Lucy's still perky, chipper and as grumpy looking as always, and is all booked in for surgery today. I know it's ridiculous, but I'm already insanely worried about how it will go; I suppose it's understandable, since the last rabbit surgery visit ended up with Bella being put to sleep. Please keep my beautiful Lucy-bun in your thoughts today, if you can.

Cute bunny!
AND I LOVE YOUR BLOG LAYOUT!!!!
lucy's adorable!! i hope she gets better soon! i know there's nothing worse than seeing a pet hurt.
Feel better soon, Lucy Bun!
Poor Lucy-bun. Best thoughts heading your way Bunny-Momma.
I was a wreck both times my cats have had surgeries (and one time it was just a neuter!), so I say it's completely normal to be worried. People expect you to just go to work and not think about your pet being operated on?? I'm sorry, but I worry about whether or not I swish my mouthwash around for long enough in the morning, there is no way I'm not going to stress over my pets getting surgeries.
I hope Aussie vets are cheaper than US vets, because Max's little tooth extraction killed my bank balance. Good luck Lucy!
How could anything bad happen to anything so cute?
Aw. Hope your bunny is ok in the long run. I remember when my sister used to raise bunnies for show and meat that they'd sometimes get nasty sores if they scratched themselves on the cages; draining the pus and so forth from them was, at best, an unpleasant experience and a slow healing. Sounds like you have a good recovery strategy, which sounds a lot nicer. :)
I'll pray for little Lucy. I hope everything goes well! I know how much pets are part of the family so I completely understand!
aw - poor bunny! I saw your blog through twenty-somethings... you're on the reader :)
I'm thinking of you and Lucy, I would totally go nuts if anything was hurting Annie.
Poor little bun-bun! I hope Lucy feels better soon!
My budgie has had surgery twice (seriously!) and it worried the hell out of me both times. He weighed only 30g. But today he's sitting on the top of my laptop and chatting away as I write this.
I'm sure your cute little baby will be ok.
So sorry about your bun bun. You are not a bad momma. The same thing happened to my Skittles (cat) and I think she had her boo boos for a good week. They had to shave her ass & everything. (That's where the boo boos were.) I felt terrible. I'm sure she felt worse. The only bright spot was that having a "shaved _ _ _ _ _" made for great jokes after she got all better. Hope all goes well and she mends quick as a bunny!
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your bun bun. And it's not your fault! You're a good bunny mum because you took her to the vet and got her checked out! A lot of people would just ignore them or not be bothered to get it checked out so quickly. I hope everything goes well tomorrow with the op!
It's always hard when your babies are ill. Furry or not, they're still your babies.
Sending happy thoughts and fairy dust for a speedy recovery for Miss Lucy Bun :)
I hope she is ok!
Holy shit, 19 comments?
Sending happy, get well thoughts Lucy's way. I'm still getting my head around Ricky being a girl.
Lucy and Fat Bum would have the cutest, lop eared babies.
Poor Lucy! I'll cross my fingers for everything to go perfectly!
awe I hope she gets well soon! she is adorable!! :)
and don't worry - you're not a bad rabbit mommy. it's hard to catch everything right away.
Oh noes! I hope Lucy gets better soon!
And you are not a bad rabbit momma. I've had similar things happen with my cats, where they scratch themselves until they bleed and I never notice.
